What is a Facial

A facial cleanse, exfoliates and nourishes the skin to promote clear, well-hydrated skin. A facial is the second most popular spa service after massage. It is sometimes called a "deep-cleansing facial" or "deep-pore cleansing" facial because of extractions.

A facial involves a few basic steps:

  • Cleansing
  • Skin analysis, where the esthetician puts eye pads over your eyes and looks at your skin through a brightly lit magnifying lamp.
  • Exfoliation, usually while a steam vapor is directed at your face
  • Extraction of blackheads if you want it and it's suitable for your skin type. People have different pain tolerance for extractions. They can be uncomfortable, especially on thin or ruddy skin.
  • Facial massage to relax you and stimulate your skin and facial muscles.
  • A mask targeted to your skin type.
  • Application of toners and protective creams.
  • Advice on home skin care.

10 Do's and Dont's for Facials:

  • Arrive for your facial with a clean face devoid of any makeup or moisturizer if possible. Allow the esthetician to review your intake questions with you, examine your skin and question you about diet, exercise, and anything else that may affect the health of your skin.
  • Avoid facials if you have sunburn or windburn or after waxing and laser services unless specified.. While your skin can use the pampering, ingredients in facials can penetrate burnt skin deeply adding to irritation.
  • Let the esthetician know of any allergies you have, even seasonal allergies, and describe any reactions you’ve had to cosmetics.
  • Facials are the height of luxury. Allow yourself to be pampered and enjoy the experience. Relax and breathe easily. Listen to the mellow music and breathe in the fragrances. Pampering has a profound psychological effect. Research your options and choose a place known for its top holistic skin care.
  • Inform your esthetician about any medications you’re on including topical or oral preparations such as Accutane, retinoids or alpha and beta hydroxy acids or skin preparations you've had reactions to in the past.
  • Avoid facials on your big day. Unless you regularly have a custom facial and know what to expect, it’s best to avoid facials on the night of your hot date or big event. Facials can occasionally cause a temporary redness or irritation.
  • If you routinely have facials and you need expected results, go with a therapy that’s tried and true. Your wedding day isn’t the time to experiment with the latest signature procedure. Choose a facial that’s worked well for you in the past if it's a big day. Otherwise, signature facials are a great way to try something new.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after your facial for optimal hydration. Dehydration can strip your skin’s glow and add years to your complexion. For best results, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before and several hours after your facial.
  • Regular attention to your skin using a gentle cleanser morning and night, exfoliation, and a specific moisturizers, hydrators and a trusty spf will make facials more psychologically enjoyable and beneficial for the skin. A facial can bring out the best in your skin. Combined with an anti-inflammatory diet, rich in minerals, omega-3 oils such eating plan, your skin can remain glowing and youthful.
  • Consult with an esthetician when booking your appointment to make sure you're scheduled for the best esthetician for your needs and to ensure that you've selected the right facial.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes it to "blister" and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. The new skin also is temporarily more sensitive to the sun.

What Conditions Does a Chemical Peel Treat?

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and hereditary factors
  • Improve the appearance of mild scarring
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles and dark patches due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills (Melasma)
  • Improve the look and feel of skin that is dull in texture and color

Waxing

Waxing provides temporary removal of facial and body hair. Depending on the individual, results will typically last 3-6 weeks. Hair will return softer and with minimal growth after repeated, routine sessions. For best results, allow hair to grow at least 2 weeks between waxing or shaving and/or be at least ¼ inch long. Inform your therapist of any injuries that include open wound, rashes, burns, allergies, depilatory use, topical prescriptions, oral prescriptions or exfoiants.
